Straight answers
The questions people ask before they ring.
Including the awkward ones. If yours isn't here, ring 01892 887129 and ask it directly.
Booking Gavin.
- Who actually turns up?
- Gavin. Sparkworx Ltd is a one-man band — there is no pool of engineers and nothing gets passed to a subcontractor. It's the reason customers write his name into their reviews rather than the company's.
- How do I get hold of you?
- Ring 01892 887129, or email gavin@sparkworx.co.uk. If it's a general enquiry, info@sparkworx.co.uk reaches the same place. You're welcome to message on Facebook or Instagram too, but the phone is quickest.
- What are your hours?
- There aren't fixed office hours to quote — it's one person, out on jobs most of the day. Ring or email whenever suits you and you'll get a call back; urgent things get dealt with as urgent things.
- How far do you travel?
- Royal Tunbridge Wells and the towns and villages around it, and further into Kent and the South East depending on the job. If you're not sure, ask — the worst that happens is a recommendation for someone closer.
Electrical work.
- What does "Part P" actually mean for me?
- Part P is the building-regulation section covering electrical work in homes. Certain jobs — new circuits, consumer unit replacements, work in bathrooms — have to be notified to building control. A registered domestic installer can self-certify that work, so you get the certificate without the council inspection fee, and you have the paperwork when you sell the house.
- Are you NICEIC registered?
- Sparkworx works as an NICEIC-registered domestic installer covering Part P home electrical requirements. We'd rather you asked to see current certification than took a badge on a website at face value — ask when you ring and it will be sent over before anything is booked.
- My fuse board looks ancient. Does it need replacing?
- Not automatically. An old board with no RCD protection is a genuine safety point, particularly if you have sockets feeding outdoor kit, but the honest answer depends on what's actually in it and what condition the circuits are in. Gavin will tell you if it can wait.
- Will you make good afterwards?
- Yes — and it's deliberately not an extra. Chases get filled, boards go back, and the cupboard the consumer unit lives in is left as it was found. A customer's own phrase for it is "made my house safe by fixing light switches and making good my electrics".
IT, Wi-Fi and computers.
- Why does an electrician do IT?
- Because most Wi-Fi problems are really cabling problems, and most cabling problems need someone qualified to drill through the wall. Sparkworx has done both since it started — it's in the logo: electrical, IT and communications.
- Do you do business IT or just home?
- Both, at small-business scale. One customer describes Sparkworx looking after their IT solutions for over five years. It's the same arrangement either way: one person who knows your setup and picks up the phone.
- What is the refurbished HP kit about?
- Sparkworx supports HP refurbished corporate laptops and desktops. Ex-business machines are built to a higher standard than budget consumer laptops, cost considerably less than new, and come supported by the person who supplied them. Say what you need it for and you'll get a straight recommendation.
- Can you fix my printer without visiting?
- Sometimes — a fair few things get solved over the phone, and that costs you nothing. When it does need a visit, it gets a visit.
Still unsure?
Ring and describe it. Plenty of things get solved on the phone for nothing, and you'll be told honestly if a job isn't worth doing.
